MILDURA
LIFESTYLE | CALENDAR
OF EVENTS

In a central position between Sydney, Melbourne
and Adelaide, Mildura sits on the mighty Murray River in North Western
Victoria. The majestic Murray winds its way through the region, creating
and bringing forth a rich diversity of surroundings and culture.
The Mildura region encompasses a vastness of horticultural and agricultural activities,
giving rise to our renowned food and wine industry. Marvel at the beauty of neighbouring
National Parks and the abundance of wildlife, fauna and flora that inhabit them.
Mildura, with its many historical references to the life and times of our early
settlers, also incorporates a widely recognized calendar of events and festivals.
The Canadian Chaffey brothers established Mildura as an irrigation colony in
1887. This followed their success in irrigating the two Californian cities of
Ontario and Upland. Many of the Mildura street names are based on those in Upland,
which is Mildura's American sister city. W.B. Chaffeys home, Rio Vista House,
can be visited at 199 Cureton Avenue. It is now the home of the Mildura Arts
Centre and includes the regional Art Gallery and Sculpture Park as well as the
performing Arts Theatre.
Deakin Avenue, which provides a magnificent entrance to Mildura was originally
designed by the Chaffeys to run trams along its central plantation. Deakin Avenue
was named after Alfred Deakin, the Victorian Minister for Water Supply, who later
became Prime Minister of Australia. |
